Mixology ... drink to the new year

Whether it's a signature alcoholic drink or a recently-trendy cocktail recipe, let's raise a glass to the New Year. Salud!

I began to think about my favorite adult beverages after returning from a recent business trip. Two of the Australian guests at a corporate dinner found my drink selection humorous. What can I say? I drink what I like, not what is today's hip concoction in feature film or television product placement.

Anyway, I had ordered a Tequila Sunrise (above left), to which they snickered and said that was sooo 1970's. Then, they each promptly ordered what they thought was the trendy 'it' drink, a Mojito (above right). Yeah, right ... Mojitos have been a bar scene staple in Texas for a couple of decades, you silly boys!

I began to think about what drink would get my vote for the very tastiest, and I'm sure my ballot would be cast for (drumroll please) the Jamaican Hummingbird!

You should taste it, too. I think you will love it!

Jamaican Hummingbird
1 oz bananas
1 oz coconut cream
1 oz creme de bananas
1 oz rum
1/2 oz Tia Maria coffee liqueur
1 oz strawberries
Crushed ice

Mix all ingredients in a blender until smooth. You just can't go wrong with rum drinks.

As a matter of fact, rum cake is always a winner at my house. Have you ever eaten a Tortuga Rum Cake?

This cake is made and shipped daily using a special Tortuga Gold blend of rum that is not bottled and not available to the public. (Sold through Amazon.com, too.)

But, I digress ...

What can I say? When I find something I like, I stick with it.

But, I do keep a great little bartending book on hand for guests who like to try out different drinks.

My bar bible is a 1948 edition of the Bartender's Guide by Trader Vic. (Passed down in my family, so that I, too, can serve the classics.)

You just can't go wrong with a drink that has been loved and served for over 60 years.

Cheers to you with wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

I saw SO many of those rum cakes when we went on our cruise. We didn't get one because we didn't know anything about them, now I wish I did.
