Gray: refined and defined ...

You should have seen the look on my husband's face when I painted our bedroom in two shades of taupe with decidedly gray undertones. The first words he said were, "It's battleship gray!" "Hardly," I noted. "Ralph Lauren paint does not come in battleship gray."

Three walls are painted in a medium hue and the accent wall in a darker shade. I love having a dark bedroom -- no 'sunny-keep-me-awake' colors here. It's all about romance and sleep, thank you very much. I was after an embracing, cocooning space and think I achieved it.

Gray color schemes are among my favorites. They just feel so well-mannered and provide a bit of mystery in my mind. Take the room below photographed by Marie-Jose Jarry, for instance. Just one gray accent wall gives this space its vavoom! Without it, much less depth and character.

The dining spaces (shown below) with their graphite shading are so appealing to me. What I love is that any accent color works well, and either gold or silver metallics play nicely with every shade of gray.

Not ready for an entirely gray room? Take a page from the design scheme below, and only paint the lower half of the walls. The rich charcoal truly anchors these rooms with European pinache.

Dark stained woods as well as light, natural wood finishes work equally well with gray. And, you want to see something pop? Just set it in front of a gray wall.

Pop, I tell you, pop!
