Ottoman empire ...

Prop your feet up and relax like the kingdom is yours! Sure, ottomans are often used for loftier purposes, like substituting as a coffee table.  But, when your tootsies need a break, an ottoman is indispensible.

And, when ottoman's strike a balance between form and function, they can truly enhance a room's decor. The tufted, white vinyl ottoman echos the modern spin in the seating area shown on The Lennoxx.

I'm drawn to the deer hide upholstery on the ottoman in Frederic Fekkai's home (above). But, I'm thinking that I would be hesitant to place two ottomans in one sitting group. Image via Full House.

On the other hand, a zebra print may be over the top solo, but in this room created by Windsor Smith (above right), it is a strikingly beautiful focal point.

Talk about bravely decorating a room with a host of colors and patterns. I'm not sure I would have picked the same fabric for the ottoman at left, but it somehow works well in this room. Image via Design with Christine.

Inspired by these deliciously practical furnishings, I set out to find a ottoman in need of love. In a more-shabby-than-chic thrift store, I found a neglected little number for just $10. Dowdy upholstery with burn holes is all that stands between it and a new life in my living room. So, I've bought a yard of cut velvet in a handsome shade of graphite and am spending time this week to give it a new look.

I'll be posting some before and after photos next week. Stay tuned.
